Polygon’s Polygon Ecosystem Token (POL)—formerly MATIC—is the native utility and governance token of the Polygon PoS chain, a Layer 2 scaling solution for Ethereum designed to deliver near-instant finality, low transaction costs (as low as $0.0097 per tx), and Ethereum-compatible smart contract functionality. Launched in October 2023 as a rebranded token (replacing MATIC) to align with Polygon’s expanded ecosystem—now encompassing Polygon PoS, zkEVM, and modular rollups—POL serves as the primary medium of exchange, staking asset, and governance mechanism for validators, developers, and users interacting with the network. Its positioning as a multi-chain bridge token (deployed on Ethereum and Polygon PoS) underscores Polygon’s strategy to unify liquidity across its scaling solutions, while its inflationary emission model and burn mechanism (via transaction fees) create a dynamic supply-demand balance critical for long-term value accrual. With a total supply of 10.6 billion tokens and a market cap of ~$989 million, POL’s utility extends beyond transaction fees to staking rewards (variable APY), governance voting, and ecosystem incentives, making it indispensable for participants in…
